Discussion in 'Upcoming Games Discussion' started by Aeternus, 7 Nov 2007.

  1. Anyone here purchase the game already? If so, what are you thoughts?

    I bought it..

The MP is frantic, which is par for the course with a Quake driven title.. Still I had a whole map on the roof of a building manning a machine gun, and never got killed.. Not something I'm used too.. I guess that's made possible by the meat grinder nature of the game.. It's fun though for sure..

The SP has a pretty good story and is well laid out.. Shame about the AI.
AI allies that can't... hit... anything.. ever.. If there are 40 enemy out there, you're going to be killing all of them, because in the video game world, marines and SAS are only trained to shoot "near" the enemy..
Enemy AI is fantastic, they rarely miss me, and they ALL seem to target the player.. A nuke could go off near your partner and he'll come out ok. Check your uniform too, because there must be a grenade magnet in it, you WILL receive all the incoming grenades.. Always..

The dogs, nice idea, poorly executed.. Once they're on you, you're dead.. Forget that you're apparently one of the most highly trained soldiers on the planet, Lassie the german sheppard has you beat every time.

All of this wouldn't be so bad, except the game is essentially some nice story bits, light action, and then these stupidly frantic identical firefights, where you're pretty much the only target.

I stopped playing the SP part at the end of the sniper level. I'm not sure how the game designers have decided that I'm supposed to do their levels, but if there's only one way to do it; a "who cares about fun, this is how you'll play our game" supplement should've been included in the box. There's only so many times I can be overrun with no way to do anything differently (thanks to their save points) that I can take before its just not fun anymore.

In short, pretty game, nice story, level design is good (AC130 level was awesome), the AI guys, and the idiots who design those one sided firefights should be fired..

Multiplayer is still a good amount of fun..

  3. that's too bad about the SP... CoD had a pretty nice one as i remember

I actually bought the game while i made a stop at Walmart for something else, but haven't opened it yet...

The mulitplayer is really what i bought it for though as I had massive tons of fun on CoD multiplayer....so I may slice through the adhesive yet...

    thnx for the review Asp

SP got a bit better when I dropped the difficulty a couple levels, but the AI is still pretty stupid.. :p

  5. Got it, not that far into it. Playing the USMC Sgt. Put it on avg difficulty which is how I play most of the SP games now, rather just get through it and see what there is to see so I can get to the MP faster.

So far its good, not great.

  6. Well, I bit the bullet and opened the box. I've played it a bit on multiplayer- almost to lvl22 - i think i'm a Master Seargent lvl II or something made up like that. I've gotten most of the unlocks for the m16 and the SAW. Pretty fun so far, but i have played on some servers/maps that were...less than fun. Haven't touched SP yet.

  7. i started the sp tonight and it's been pretty fun so far...and the AC-130 level is a total blast....just wish there were more bad guys to light-up!

    ok...time for bed

  8. Yeah, the single player is fun. Almost like watching a six+ hour movie. Multiplayer is fantastic, but only on hardcore servers where pretty much one shot equal one kill and there is no HUD.

multiplayer is fun and some hardcore servers you cant bunny hop or be a run and gunner , they want you to work as a team.

  10. yea.. peeps are raving about it at my school. I havent had a chance to play it myself tho

  11. no, though it's kinda hard to miss people in my class playing a game... especially when they have a laptop in the back row "supposedly" doing work :)

  12. My ideal server would be Hardcore, no or extremely limited airstrikes and helis (i assume this is possible, but haven't seen any) and domination. HQ or Sabotage would be fine too, but def. hardcore setting.

While i enjoy the game for sure, I can't stand the spawning. I wish they could blend CoD with Enemy Territory style objective maps and spawning.

Maybe the hardcore servers are where I need to play, that or cut down on the 50+ player maps.. Its just insane with the constant airstrikes and spam like that going off.. That and the maps are too small to accomodate too many players.

Like any innovative game mechanic it didn't take long for players to abuse the "penetrator rounds" upgrade you can get.. It's retarded as hell watching two sides blast away at each other, out of line of site behind a wall. Once you lose the need to aim, what's the point?

Agreed Asp. The maps are way to small for the high number player servers (especially Backlot). I usually try to find 20 player ones which to me are perfect although I'll play on 32 ones too. The only problem with those higher player servers on hardcore is that there's usually always a UAV up so it's like playing on a standard server. It should be that the kill levels for UAV, Airstrike and Heli's should be higher for the hardcore servers. But hardcore are the ones to play on.

The spawning is different as you spawn at the location of an active player on your side. I guess it's the games way of keeping the spawn camping down to a minimum. It does suck though where with some maps, if the other side has your side trapped in a corner building, it's a killfest.

All in all though, it's a fun game. Stressful sometimes with a few bouts of screaming rage but as fun as you wish to make it. It'd be a great team diversion game to putz around with.

  16. Like Granite, I try to play on servers with fewer players. I like anywhere from the teens to mid 20's myself.

As for the 'deeper impact' perk, which I myself do use, I agree with your assessment regarding the imbalancing aspect when coupled with near constant UAV coverage. I'm still not used to have a radar, even if its somewhat realistic in this case, so I don't take advantage of that. I do however, use it to finish guys off that I wasn't able to get a clean kill w/my G3 that have ducked behind light cover.

I think upping the kill count needed for the specials should be closer to the following:

    UAV - 5
    Airstrike - 10-12
    Heli- 15-18

Basically close to doubling the kills needed. That or simply remove the Airstrike and Heli's from the game. UAV's i'd be more cool with sticking around.

 While i'm crying about aspects of the game I don't like...martyrdom is lame imo. Furthermore, bunny hopping is still lame too.

All that said, I most certainly use the airstrikes and heli's when I get them since the enemy won't hesitate to do so.
