Dust 514

Discussion in 'Upcoming Games Discussion' started by The Peacemaker, 22 Nov 2010.

  1. Sooo, I think I may have just had a heart attack. CCP games is developing a new console based MMOFPS set in the EVE universe. The games will be linked, actions in eve will have a result in Dust and vice versa. The players of dust will fight the ground war for control of the planets in eve. EvE players make merc contracts for the players of Dust.

And it looks great to boot! Being built on the Unreal 3 engine

This looks awesome, however it has one huge thing going against it: Console Only.

    CCP FAIL

    Manipwnd.

  6. I know I know. Its terrible. CCP cant be that foolish. The game is still a year away. I doubt theyd make it just for consoles. I hope they dont anyways. It looks great and the fact that it links in with EVE just makes it special.

From everything I've seen and read that is unlikely. CCP wants to tap into the cash cow that is creating a console game. Plus on a console they don't have to deal with cheating as much.

I see it as quite an insult to all the EVE players out there myself :\

  8. Honestly, I'd still play it. Looks like a good game so far and CCP is probably one of the best companys out there. Remember eve was started from scratch. CCP is CCP no one has them by the sack hairs. And they have proven time and time again that they do care what the community thinks and wants. EvE is probably the most successful MMO 2nd only to WoW, and I think EvE will far surpass WoW in longetivity.

The other reason I am fiercly loyal to that company is that when they mess up, they don't prance around it. They lay it on the table, take the heat and roll back bad patches. They always strive to get something right and very seldom release something if its not ready. That's something you almost NEVER see anymore. Far too often a company pushes to make christmas or something and releases a horribly buggy incomplete game, or release one that's half done and 3 weeks later drop a DLC to make it the full game.

They've released countless FREE expansions, the game is coming up on 10 years old for cripes sake.Any other company would have redid the engine, called it EVE 2 and resold it for 50 - 60 bucks, CCP has been charging 5 dollars + first month sub for years. Servers get upgraded 2 - 3 times a year.

CCP deserves to make some greenbacks. They've earned it, and IMO the money they make will be turned into more things for these games (PC version of this?) Or perhapse CCP will expand and become a publisher and development studio, making other great games. Its a company that has earned my respect despite problems, they arnt slow to fix them...

Edit: It seems CCP has stated that it is very possible this game will come to a desktop near you after establishing a user base in the console market. So like I said, they want to make some money via consoles so they can pay for even better stuff.

All great info, but it doesn't change the fact it is a console game, which I don't play.

I am a PC gamer, so unless they produce it in PC format, I won't play it.

  10. I just hope they do mani. The company has potential is a big summary of what I just said haha

If they're going to 'eventually' go to a desktop version, why alienate it's player population by going console specific first? Oh, that's right. $$$$
Not to berate your game or your loyalty Peace. One thing that this shouldn't become is a console vs PC thread, because the majority of CDLers would rather see Dust 514 on the PC probably.

  12. Oh no, I agree. I just don't think CCP has the capitol to do that right now, so they are reaching out to the market where they can make the money to use to invest in something like that. They keep upgrading EvE so I imagine they will do the same with Dust. EvE is going to be around for a while so they have to make sure Dust doesn't become dated. If it does then the whole Dust affecting EvE won't work anymore. That's why I think its inevitable the game WILL come to the PC

See, I just don't understand your logic here Peace.
With a console, they have to develop brand new code to work with, not only the Xbox, but PS3 and (perhaps) Nintendo. They're going to have to reach out to at least two of the three console makers here. And it has been my understanding that the PS code is much different than the Xbox code. Here you now have to invest in training your programmers, or hiring new ones, to bring your product to a new environment. Why not just invest that capital into a PC version?

That is where the logic fails me. Not just yours, but CCPs as well.

If you look at any major shooter released in the past few years, almost all the PC versions have been sad ports of the console one. I'd say it's definitely easier to make a game that crosses console lines than PC/console divide.. Look at MW2, BC2, Medal of Honor, all multi-console titles with a lackluster PC port.

All you have to do is take a look at how much these shooters rake in if they're good, and hyped enough, and it makes perfect sense.. Selling a shooter on the PC platform, probably never has and likely never will outsell pushing it onto a console path. Rampant PC piracy vs console stability alone will more than see to that..

That and if I want to make a game for a hardware platform, at least with the PS2, and Xbox, I know EXACTLY what I'm dealing with. The threads you guys have been cooking up about new rigs shows you why developers probably shy away from the PC market; the possible combinations of hardware scalability is practically endless.. As would be the headaches of trying to make your game run well on such a broad spectrum..

It doesn't make sense for CCP to make an actual MMO style shooter on a console, as they'd never be able to handle the load of a game as big as something like planetside.. But the PS2 has proven that a game like DUST could work if it resembled something like PS2's MAG. It does make sense for CCP to do this if they're looking to generate some money, and expand the experience to the PC later. Though I think Microsoft has already tossed the idea of PCs and Xboxes ever interfacing with each other; the primary unspoken reason being, PC players would murder most console players in shooters.

In short, EVE players do not necessarily translate into FPS players, so making a PC version of the game is no guarantee of anything. A console version might give them the income to take the idea further. So I'd say Peace is probably right on their approach.

  15. I just hope they do it. This game looks far too good to be nerfed by the limitations of the consoles. Speaking of which why don't they just make a mouse/ keyboard set for the consoles, bridging the gap between the PCs and consoles, enabeling games such as this to be open to all.Probably something to do with the fact that console sales might drop if u can buy a PC and play games that xbox and PS3 has.

Btw asp, maps in this are supposed to b 5km x 5km so it should be very Battlefield 2ish

I honestly don't think developers are shying away from the PC market due to hardware complexity. The only reason imo gaming companies are making games for consoles is because they can rape for required DLC, they can get all sorts of kids who hound their parents to buy game for them. The entry level is so much lower than on PC and the market is so much larger.

As a result, gaming suffers. Games are less complex, less fun - and require less and less skill. All so they companies can make more $$ and pump out more and more garbage.

Back when I started gaming I would have NEVER imagined gaming degrading to the state it is in now. It's sad :(

Ultimately they're companies, and they're out to make money.. So ya, consoles are a bigger market with much lower cost to get started. DLC you can thank companies like Microsoft for that.. I've read quite a few interviews with companies like Bungie who aren't comfortable charging for maps and add ons that they would have given away for nothing in the past. Even Valve is a perfect example.. TF2 is vastly different on the PC than in the console world precisely because Valve refuses to let anyone charge for updates they give away for free to PC users. So no DLC for Xbox TF2.
I can't think of a major developer that started working on consoles as well that I haven't heard some dev comment about how much easier it is to program for consoles; precisely because they can 100% predict/troubleshoot the behaviour of an Xbox vs some guy's random collection of hardware in his super powered gaming box. The PC will always be a more powerful, versatile platform, but when you're going for unit sales that's not your target market. You want the biggest market saturation you can get, and that's just never going to be the PC gaming market.

It's funny too Hamma, I forsaw the exact opposite from you :p I absolutely saw the market slipping to what it is now. I don't care how many of you on here buy vs pirate games, but you can completely thank the wonderful world of piracy for hastening the decline. That stats on Starcraft 2 bear it out too, 3 million copies of the game sold in the first month, and they found over 2-3 million downloaded torrents of the game on a few popular sites in the first couple months. So if you're a profit minded business, who are you going to make games for again? They're going to develop for the platforms that will provide them with sales. A lot of pro-piracy types will huff and puff about having to pay "the man" (or whatever), and a thousand other excuses and self righteous crap about why they should just get everything for free.
Fair enough, hope they're happy because this is what gets left behind, crappy ports and little to no PC support. Devs will go where the money is, period; and no one should really be that surprised by it.

  18. Yeah but how many people did blizzard lose to their stupid DRM rules? I know I didnt buy (or pirate) SC2 because of the always connected in order to play single player and no lan. They still sold over 3 million copies sounds just like the MPAA complaining about piracy even though every year they are breaking box office records.

  20. Lunar I have to say that's pretty cool!

Asp I have to agree with you people follow money, and the money is in console games unfortunately. I truly love gaming on my PC, but find it cumbersome at times due to hardware upgrades, conflicts, etc. and the fact that I run Linux just adds to it. Don't get me wrong when Cata drops I will be glued to the keyboard for months, but to pass the time nothing like going on to gamefly and browsing 1,000's of console games that can be delivered within a couple of days. Certainly the depth of the game is not the focus on most console games, ease of use trumps all in this market.
