If you use PSN, you're porked.

Oh, sorry, you probably need details.

    http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/04/26/update-on-playstation-network-and-qriocity/

So basically I should get a new debit card before I head to Vegas to be safe.

"Although we are still investigating the details of this incident, we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state, zip), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login, and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained. While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained. "

Dammit, I should have titled it "From the people that brought you Rootkit!

They said 77 million accounts compromised..

They aren't saying whether or not credit cards were at risk, but most likely the are. It's a PR nightmare for them right now. All that potential identity theft and credit fraud made even more realistic because they don't just have your credit card numbers but a ton of personal information as well to back it up.

The worst thing people could do now is not cancel their credit card, and hope for the best.. It'll take those hackers a while to sort through that data, and it could be months before someone tries hitting your card up for a free stereo. By that point if you haven't changed it out, you may think it was all worry for nothing, until you have that giant purchase on your card. Then watch as banks try to blame the customers for not cancelling their cards when they knew what happened at Sony.

Too many companies, collecting too much information they don't actually need, just waiting to be compromised..

The best response so far, besides obviously "Why the F didn't you tell us last week?"

"When you say they got our passwords, you mean they got the hashes of the passwords right? You couldn't possibly have been stupid enough to store that in clear text."

I would like to live in a world where they didn't just MD5 the credit card numbers without a salt. However I am starting to think that isn't my world.

I hate to think of this going down when I am in Vegas.

This just in... passwords were stored in clear text.

  7. They are claiming CC info wasn't breached but it appears it probably was lol.

They also said our info was safe. I turned off the network on my box and have no intention of turning it back on except for the occasional update.

You know the day after it happened that Microsoft, Amazon, Apple and others had some execs asking some hard questions about their own networks.

Anyone offering odds for if the network will be back up in a week? Or if it will work right the first time? My money is on over a week and that at least 20% of the machines will have some unforeseen issue that prevents access. Up to and including bricking some PS3's.

Irony time.. A day after reading about the breach I was watching Netflix saying "thank god I've got an Xbox.."

An hour later I got the 3 bars red ring of death..

One of the things that Sony is talking about giving us for their screw up, 30 days of premium PSN... They just need a credit card to sign you up...

Here are some of the new security measures:

    * Added automated software monitoring and configuration management to help defend against new attacks
    * Enhanced levels of data protection and encryption
    * Enhanced ability to detect software intrusions within the network, unauthorized access and unusual activity patterns
    * Implementation of additional firewalls

AKA, stuff they should have already been doing.

I realized tonight, DC Online is PSN only. MMORPG offline for a week, there is going to be some screaming.

Anything they do is moot anyway. The data has been stolen and sold. I think that the auditors should be fired as well. PCI compliance. If you are storing CC info, you should be held to that standard.

  14. Besides updating my PS3's operating system the other day, I don't think I'm going to turn on my console again until they are certain the network is a lot stronger than it currently is... and I suspect that won't be until Christmas.

I take it we're about to see a similar cockup with anyone subscribed to Planetside now?? At least I lost my wallet a few weeks ago, so any credit card information they have right now is cancelled anyway.. Don't know if I'm going to give them updated information now.

I'm pretty sure SOE is just taking proactive measures with their system after the chicanery. I don't believe any of their stuff has been stolen.

    Who knows though..

I'd be leery. Hopefully when they started monitoring patterns and traffic they didn't find SOE was porked too.

Star Wars Galaxies are on SOE and I think at least one other MMORPG. Everquest maybe?

You know there have been some pretty high level meetings at all major online companies and anyone not up to snuff is sure as heck going to nail their stuff down. I'm guessing SOE realized they had the some of the same holes. Corporate standards being what they are.

Blizzard, Microsoft and Apple have got to be looking at this and saying, "There but for the grace of God go I..."

  18. Assholes. If Sony's entire network is run the same way as the PSN, there may not even be a company left to protect following their incompetence!
