EQ Next

  1. So any thoughts so far....

My only take away from what I have been able to read so far is I am happy that they are going to continue with their community driven dev cycles like PS2.

  2. The bonanza of info comes at 3pm eastern. I'll be watching the whole livestream so I'm sure I'll have plenty to add in this thread. :)

  3. Wow... I have more questions now than I did before the presentation. lol

I'm not sure how to describe it succinctly... Maybe EQ+Minecraft+Guildwars?

It's definitely not your fathers MMO...

  4. Very early in engine combat samples...

For those of you who haven't seen any vids yet, here are some early samples of what combat will be like.

  7. So....Yes? Hamma, make Smed make us EQN VIPs, Stat.

  8. Add another MMO to my list of games I'm keeping any eye on. Now to just invent a time machine to allow me to play all of them.

  9. I am intrigued by the possibility and look forward to future news. Nice to hear that Dave is working on this one (assuming I read Kotaku correctly earlier).

  10. Yep, he's director of development.

  11. Impressive, looks like a real life eater.

Dave is the director of the entire EQ Franchise so he's definitely pretty closely involved. Jen and I got the opportunity to talk to him a bunch - with him at the helm this game has huge potential.

The prospect looks promising, I'm curious what the combat will be like. It sounds like they don't even know what that will look like yet. Hopefully it will break the mold like the rest of the game has the potential to.

Also - for clarification there are two products:
    • EverQuest Next - the main game, no release date announced.
    • EverQuest Landmark - Essentially, Minecraft on crack. This will allow you to build worlds, objects, castles etc etc. They will have specific areas where the EQN art direction will be enforced, those areas have the potential to make it into the final game. Out this winter.

You will also be able to build things like towers, and sell those things. If someone uses all your towers in their castle you get a cut.

It's a genius idea really because Level Design is quite easily one of the hardest and most time intensive parts of building an MMORPG. Pushing that out to the community at large will result in some really awesome worlds and save SOE time.

  13. Yes, the idea of vetted user-created content is a very good one. It's almost kind of surprising that some of the other companies haven't tried this yet.

The combat will be the main thing; I'm not sure I'm down for a "lock-on button mash" affair. Tera's pseudo-action combat system (there's still some lock-on, but it's much more organic than WoW's explicit "click-to-target" method) would be a nice template though where position and aim matter somewhat.

Also, I have a lot more faith in SmokeJumper than I have in most directors, so that counts for something. This could be a most interesting title indeed.

I'm guessing everyone figured this out, but be sure to apply for beta:

    https://www.everquestnext.com

It's on the front page, just have to login to apply.

  15. I would love to see more of a aiming combat like Neverwinter. A game without a cross hair saddens me.

  16. You'll get your wish. They've already stated that if you swing your sword and it hits something it hits something.

  17. They should let people do that for PS2 with a similar toolkit, but I doubt they will... they have Player Studio but all their games that allow you to submit content are for US users only, even though it's been running for over a year.

I can't apply for the NA beta either as it can't pinpoint my location; it will only let me sign up to its EU-counterpart.
