Cottage Fun. :D

Discussion in 'General Open/Public Discussion' started by Asmodeus, 12 Aug 2002.

  1. Just spent the weekend up at my friends cottage.. 9 of us, all camping on the hill behind the cottage. Mind you the temperature was roughly the same as australia on the hill, but once we went down by the cottage, it was comfortable again. :)
    I'm burnt. heh

I have a story for all you -would be- drinkers of alcohol out there.
I had to take care -again- of a person who had drank too much in too little of time. There's a fine line between social drinking, and trying too hard to look "cool".

She was a diabetic, and was drinking moderate amounts of alcohol. Not enough to kill her, but just enough to make her sick. Her blood sugar level was around 16 when she took it right before she was sick. (if you don't know anything about diabetes, the average range for a diabetic's blood sugar is supposed to be around 6-10, or around there.. ideal for her was supposed to be 8.) Anyway, after she finished vomiting and was able to take her level again, it was down to 13, took it again, and it was down to 8... at this point she said, it was dropping too fast. I took aside the host and said "Listen, if she doesn't moderate her blood sugar level soon enough, we're going to the hospital, understand?" He understood, and ran down the hill to prep his van. At this point, we tried getting her to drink some stuff, but I knew it wasn't going to work, so I took one of my very good friends (he wasn't drinking) and said "If you see us bootin outta here in the van, take care of the guys. I have my cell, but don't call on it, I may need it to dial 911." ....5 minutes later we were in the van on the way to the nearest hospital.. I had called ahead to let the hospital know we had a diabetic emergency, and have someone ready for us when we get there. So, here we are crusing down the road at anywhere between 120-140kph towards the hospital. A trip that normally takes 20-25 minutes, took us 10 minutes. We got to the hospital, and helped her onto the stretcher (she was too weak to help herself at this point).. The host and I left into the waiting room, while she, and her boyfriend stayed in the emergency room.
(comical relief time) myself and the host were sitting there, and I was reading the best book ever: THE HOLY BIBLE.. and we laughed a little bit about it, because there was a TOC with different titles like : insecurity, scared.. etc.
Then, he poked at my glasses and said.. hey look, you're missing a lense. I was like.. WTF! that's why my vision was blurry out of the one side... I kept trying for the longest of time to focus on stuff, but only one side was focusing..
    /end comical relief time.
We went back into the emergency room to see how she was.. and she was doing a lot better.. she had an IV in her arm, and was being rehydrated.
She ate some cookies, managed to keep them down, then we brought her home again. (all this took about 3.5 hrs, from the time she started getting sick, until the time we brought her home).

I know everyone here is mature enough to drink in moderation, but for those future drinkers. Drink slow, and don't push yourself too hard.
I personally have never pushed myself too far. I stop.
Social drinking is one thing, drinking to kill yourself is another.

It was a hard lesson for her to learn, and well.. she learned it all right.

She was alright at the end, she was just hung over, and dehydrated.

    Aside from that..

I had a great time down there, enjoyed everything there was to offer, except for the mosquitos. Damn things bit up my toes.

Had a home-made sauna and everything. We were roughing it pretty good up there... outhouse, no shower, lake and sauna to clean yourself. It was all good stuff. :)
I should have pictures of the outing fairly soon... :)

By the way, bras are kinda comfy. :x

  3. Ah. We all must have our own drinking experiances. Its one of those things you can't preach into people imo. Some of us nearly kill ourselves, so of us have friends that nearly do, and some of us are not so lucky :(

Anyway glad you had a good time. Great planning ahead asmo. Are you diabetic? How come you know so much about it?

Can't wait to see the pictures, you can keep the one of you in a bra to yourself though :p

  4. Rayz, I'm not a diabetic, and just an FYI to everyone, no it wasn't Jen. :)

Whenever my friend was sick, I told her to give me a crash course on the primary information I needed to know, aka sugar levels, etc, and I'm trained to respond to situations like this.. if I can't do it, chances are nobody else on scene can, so we goto the only place that CAN help her: the hospital.
I also talked with the female doc, while we were at the hospital, about diabetes

As for preaching wisdom and stuff rayz...
What I normally do when I drink, is I have one drink, drink it fast (beer usually), and if that one bottle hits me hard, I don't drink anymore, if it doesn't hit me, or I can just barely feel anything, then I'll take a couple more..

I find with drinking, you have to listen to your body. If it's telling you, whoa I can't walk straight, or whoa the world is spinning, I know it's enough, and time to start eatting some food again.

*shrugs* People just have to have their own way of drinking...

I also make sure I never sit still for more than a half hour..

    *shrugS*

  5. Freshman year in college I listened to my body too. I just kept drinking till it made me throw up, then I figured it had had enough :p

Well...I guess our methods are a little different :D

Ah well, at least I grew out of it before I really hurt myself ;)

  6. Sorry bout your friend, Asmo. You're a great friend to do all that shit. There should be more like you.

    -but-

She was diabetic and should know the effect of alcohol on her. I'm glad it turned out alright.

BTW, spinning rooms are win :D

I'm lucky that I'm such a pussy and can't drink enough to get me in serious alcohol poisoning/alcoholic trouble. The most I can go is a 6 pack except on very rare occasions when the moons and stars align for me :p

  7. probably should not drink till you throw up, its all a blur because it was in school(*shudder*) but thats the point where you are very near death, or atleast something really, really, bad.

  8. its the 3 day hangovers im not too fond of
