Three American soldiers 'captured by bin Laden'

CONCERN over the fate of three American special forces soldiers deepened last night following claims that they had been captured by Osama bin Laden's guerrillas in Afghanistan.

A Gulf television station reported that al-Qaeda soldiers had seized the three Americans and two Afghan guides while they were on a scouting mission near the Iranian border. They were allegedly armed and carrying maps showing the location of al-Qaeda bases, the Qatar-based Al- Jazeera station claimed.

The station's Pakistan correspondent said that he had been contacted by a bin Laden military official, who told him that al-Qaeda would issue photographs of the captives "soon" to verify the story.

The Pentagon last night discounted the story but stopped short of a categorical denial. An official said the report was "most likely untrue". Afghanistan's ruling Taliban also said that it had not seized anybody on territory under its control.

American officials have admitted, however, that American and British special forces have been operating inside Afghanistan since the attacks on America.

In other developments, President Bush said that al-Qaeda terrorists would be hunted down wherever they "hide, or run, or plan". He said in his weekly radio address: "We did not seek this conflict but we will win it."
